Blogger Recognition Award
My Slice of Happy was nominated for a Blogger Recognition Award.
Wait, what? Let me double check that…
Yup, turns out that’s correct! Lulubel from Tinylovebug (which, if you haven’t already, you should definitely check it out here), was kind enough to nominate My Slice of Happy, which has only been up and running for a month! I can’t even believe it.
With this award, comes a few rules and responsibilities (yeah, kind of like Spiderman and his special powers, same deal):
- Thank the nominating blogger
- Write a post about the award
- Share a story of how and why you started your blog
- Offer at least two pieces of advice for new bloggers
- Pass on the nomination to another 15 bloggers
- Respond to the nominating blogger with a link to this post on their blog
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I truly can’t thank Lulubel enough for this nomination. Any type of recognition, especially at this early point in my blogging career, is beyond appreciated. Of course, I don’t do this for recognition, but it’s always nice to feel like someone appreciates what you do, right?
Why do I blog?
Like I said, I have only been blogging for about a month. I started blogging, mainly because I wanted to start writing again! I used to write all the time, be it for school or for my own benefit. Then when I graduated from school, things got busy. Between starting full time work, moving into a new house, getting a dog and still trying to find time to spend with my family, I just stopped. It wasn’t even until this summer, when I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about writing, that I realized I just wasn’t doing it anymore.
So, I decided that I would start a blog where I could write about whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Family, my dog, relationships, DIY projects (often gone wrong), Toronto life — really just any of the little things in life that make me happy. And, let me tell you, I am so glad I did!
Not only has blogging allowed me to get back to writing regularly, it has also introduced me to a whole community of bloggers. I get to read so much great content, and see what other bloggers go through as well. I am so grateful to be part of this community and be able to share some of my stuff with you all.
Advice for new bloggers
Obviously I’m new to this blogging world. So I don’t want to offer up too much advice, since I’m still figuring all of this out. But there are definitely a few things that I have learned that I am comfortable passing on!
- Be ready to put in a lot of work. And I mean A LOT! Of course, this could be different for you, depending on what your goal is with your blog. But if you’re trying to create and establish something that you want seen by others, that means you have to get traffic on your site, and doing this is no easy task. So not only will it take time to write and create content for your blog, it will also take hours and hours of work to put your work out there, and get people to visit your site. This means social media, exploring and commenting on other blogs across the internet to get your name out there, and so much more.
- You’re going to feel overwhelmed at some point. You’ll feel like you’re doing all of this work, but it’s not really getting you very far. Or you’ll have some great days and then the next few won’t be as great. That’s ok. It’s normal. Just keep working. Keep writing good content, keep pushing through and eventually you are going to see results. If you love what you’re doing and what you’re writing about, these days will be easier. Just don’t give up!
This is the super fun part of this post. As I mentioned above, I have loved getting to know other bloggers and their work. So I am so happy to share some of these wonderful gems I have come across as my nominees. Drum roll please…
Topics: Student life, self-development, planning and make-up
Why I love it: First of all, the name! Maybe it’s because I love caffeine so much too that I found this name so intriguing. But name aside, once you get to the homepage you’ll understand why I love it so much. The site is visually appealing because it’s well-organized, clean and has a cool cover photo. Sure, I’m not a student anymore, but I feel like a lot of the tips that are aimed at students, can apply to bloggers as well, especially in terms of organization.
Topics: All things parenting
Why I love it: I am always interested in parenting blogs. I find it incredibly interesting to see how different people parent. Not at all in a judgmental way, but just in awe of how awesome so many of you are at it. Sarah Bean offers lots of great recipes, DIY projects, and so much more on her blog. Also, it doesn’t hurt that her kids are adorable!
Topics: Helping female entrepreneurs achieve profitable blogs and businesses
Why I love it: Because who doesn’t love a site that helps women kick butt?!? Laura uses her experiences to guide other women to success in the entrepreneurial world, and her blog is full of helpful posts with detailed instruction and guidance. Thanks Laura!
Why I love it: I absolutely LOVE the honesty of this blog. I am not a mother. But I am a stepmom and that is hard enough. I totally understand that being a mom is not easy. Jessica is brave enough to share her experiences as a mom, honestly. She covers everything from her mental illness diagnosis, to the truth about how sometimes women lose themselves, or at least parts of their identity, when they have children. Jessica is here to help you find that woman you once were again! And also to just let you know you’re not alone, which is always nice 🙂
Topics: All about dogs!
Why I love it: Because it’s all about dogs!! As you may have noticed if you’ve been reading my posts (or checked out my Instagram), you’ll know that I love dogs. I have an obsession with my own dog, a Golden Retriever named Jack, and I love to see and read all about other people’s lives with pets. Maggie’s blog is all about her life with her dogs (she used to have three, but now it’s just Cooper), as well as her cat and new baby, Violet. It’s really a great blog and if you’re a dog-lover at all, there are some great DIY posts, product reviews, and of course, adorable pup pics everywhere 🙂
Topics: Wellness, love, money, fun, lifestyle, gratitude and purpose
Why I love it: Because who doesn’t want to be happy? Plus, on this blog, Alexandra wants to inspire women to be happy. So, happiness and girl power! Pretty kick ass combo, right? Also, I really like the layout of Alexandra’s page, it’s pretty and easy to navigate. Check it out!
Topics: Fashion, beauty, and design
Why I love it: I absolutely love the concept behind Alyssa’s Random Acts of Pastel site. Her About page says she started her journey by going around painting everyday objects around Toronto pastel colours, to brighten them up…how awesome! Since then she’s created this wicked lifestyle brand. It’s pink, it’s girly, it’s cute and I love it. Oh, and the categories on her blog are so fun!
Topics: Creativity, exploration & inspiration (recipes, travel, etc.)
Why I love it: This page is stunning! I hope that some day my page can look half as cool as this one. Simple, yet elegant, organized and just crisp. Plus, I love to travel, so I’m always curious about how others do it, and always looking for tips and tricks.
Topics: LOVE <3
Why I love it: Because I love, love. This site is all about love stories, dating tips and date ideas. Since I’m engaged, I like reading about these things out of curiosity, but I’m sure it’s super helpful to a lot of people!
Topics: Beauty, makeup, lifestyle, fashion and coffee
Why I love it: I like following blogs about makeup and fashion, since I don’t consider myself to be an expert (or event remotely close to it!), on either. Makeup in particular is not something I use often, or am good at putting on. I’m always amazed at what people can do with their makeup. Such a talent. And what I love most is that Emma’s “How To” posts, like the winged eyeliner, makes me feel like I can actually do it!
Topics: Lifestyle, Motherhood, Beauty & Style
Why I love it: Visually, Ashley’s page is incredible. The colours, the layout, the photos, everything is just perfect. But then her content! So heartwarming. I almost cried when I read the letter she wrote to her husband The couple are expecting their second child soon, and I can’t wait to read all about their next chapter 🙂
Topics: Blogging, careers, college, fitness & health, relationships, travel, wedding & more!
Why I love it: Because aren’t we all just a girl in this world? This site has so much to offer! And it’s yet another site aimed at empowering and inspiring women to be better and do better. I just love that this site covers so many topics and has something on everything women love to read about.
Topics: Health, fitness and living a holistic lifestyle
Why I love it: I love this site because it’s a friendly reminder to be healthier and care for your body. I could use one. Alannah’s blog is filled with positive vibes and covers things from body image, to healthy habits and workout tips. All things that women, in particular, can struggle with from time to time. Let’s face it, we all need a little push sometimes, and this blog gives me just that!
Topics: Budgeting, saving $$
Why I love it: This “lifestyle-on-a-budget blog” offers some useful tips on how and where to save money, while still enjoying life and not missing out on experiences. Saving money can be a stressful thing sometimes (if anybody else out there is saving for a wedding, you know what I mean!), but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy life. Sarah Jane’s tips and tricks are always appreciated 🙂
Topics: Dog everything!
Why I love it: Well, you already know I love dogs, so of course I’m gonna have another doggy blog on here. The pack this blog is about is one of the cutest I’ve ever seen! Just <3 them. Bella, Karma, Stella, Gunner and Leo are the faces of this all dog blog, and it’s so fun to read about them and see their pictures all over. As a dog owner, I am always looking for articles on how other dog owners deal with problems, from training, to diet, to product reviews. If you have a pup, or just like reading about them and looking at adorable pics, check it out.
Well, there you have it guys! Hope you enjoy all of the nominees’ sites, and find something that you love and want to follow. Thanks again to Lulubel from Tinylovebug for the nomination!
